DIABETIC FOOT Q&A

What are some signs of diabetic foot? Signs and symptoms of diabetic foot may include:

  • Tingling
  • Burning
  • Pain in feet
  • Loss of sense of touch
  • Reduced ability to feel cold or heat
  • Changes in the shape of feet over time
  • Loss of hair on feet, toes, and lower legs

Over time, diabetes can lead to damaged nerves, blood vessels, and organs.

Is diabetic foot serious?

Proper foot screening is vital for diabetic patients. Any sore, cut, or wound should be taken very seriously. Diabetes can cause poor circulation in the feet as well as nerve damage, compromising a person’s ability to detect and heal cuts or other abrasions.

Even the most minor cut in a diabetic patient’s foot can turn into a wound that won’t heal if it is not identified and treated promptly. They might develop into deep ulcers, leading to infection, gangrene, and, in worst-case scenarios, amputation.

How do you care for diabetic foot?

Daily foot care is essential for people with diabetes to maintain healthy feet and avoid serious foot problems from developing.

 Dr. Levi recommends the following:

Inspect feet daily

Examine your feet and toes every day. See a podiatrist if you spot any blisters, cuts, bruises, hot spots, or disturbances in the skin.

Hygiene

Keep feet clean and dry, especially between the toes. Make sure to moisturize the feet, especially between the toes, if they feel rough or dry. Keep toenails trimmed straight across but not too short, which can lead to ingrown toenails. Have a podiatrist trim your nails if you cannot do it.

Proper footwear

Shoes should fit properly, be made of natural materials, and be comfortable with plenty of room in the toe box.  Socks should always be worn with shoes and not be tight at the ankles. Diabetic socks can help with circulation and keep moisture away from feet.

Extreme temperatures

Never use a heating pad or electric blanket on the feet. Make sure to protect them from extreme cold and heat. Never walk barefoot.

Callus and corn removal

If you have callus or corn, don’t attempt to remove it yourself. Please schedule an appointment with a podiatrist to have them take care of it professionally and safely.
